What's it like to take the Harry Potter train?

Large Jacobite Steam Train (2)

Most of your adventure takes place on a HAGGiS coach, with the Jacobite Steam Train journey slotting into your itinerary along the way.

On day tours, you'll spend the morning exploring the Highlands with your HAGGiS guide before heading to the station for your two-hour journey aboard the Jacobite Steam Train. Your guide will make sure everyone knows where to go and when to board, so all you need to worry about is finding your seat and keeping an eye out for the Glenfinnan Viaduct.

Once you've arrived in either Fort William or Mallaig, depending on your tour, your guide will be there to meet you and get the group back on the road towards Edinburgh, Glasgow or Inverness.

If you're joining us on a multi-day tour, the train ride works in much the same way, although the Jacobite journey won't necessarily happen on the first day. Check your itinerary to see exactly when you'll board the train. Your guide will drop you off at the station, meet you at the other end and then the adventure continues.

You can ride the Jacobite Steam Train on selected HAGGiS day tours and multi-day tours. On day trips, the train journey is included in the tour price. On multi-day adventures, it is available as an optional extra.

The Hogwarts Express seen in the Harry Potter films is played by the Jacobite Steam Train. The route runs through the Scottish Highlands between Fort William and Mallaig, crossing the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct along the way.

Not directly. Tours by HAGGiS Adventures travel by coach for most of the journey before joining the Jacobite Steam Train in Fort William or Mallaig, depending on the itinerary.

The Jacobite Steam Train journey included in HAGGiS tours lasts around two hours.

No. Instead, your HAGGiS guide takes you to the correct station and carriage to board. They'll then meet you at the other end so the adventure can continue.

Depending on your tour, you can visit famous filming locations like the Glenfinnan Viaduct and Glen Coe, which appeared in the films as the backdrop for Hagrid's Hut and Hogwarts grounds.

Yes. The Glenfinnan Viaduct is the railway bridge crossed by the Hogwarts Express in the Harry Potter films. It’s in fact one of Scotland's most beloved sightseeing spots.

Yes. J.K. Rowling wrote much of the Harry Potter series while living in Edinburgh, drawing inspiration from the city's streets, architecture and atmosphere.

Hogwarts isn't real, but some HAGGiS tours visit locations that inspired or appeared in the films. You can also visit Alnwick Castle on our Castles & Broomsticks tour from Edinburgh, which doubled as Hogwarts in the first two Harry Potter films and was the setting for Harry's first flying lesson.

If you've ever wanted to see the Highlands from the window of the Hogwarts Express, it's hard to beat. The Jacobite Steam Train crosses the Glenfinnan Viaduct and passes lochs, mountains and truly magical landscapes.
